Here are the first steps to naturally get better sleep:
• Eating healthy fats like coconut oil, pasture-raised meats, eggs, and avocado all help in building sleep hormones
• High antioxidant foods, as well as not eating shortly before bed
• Try yoga for exercise and relaxation
• Keep your circadian rhythms on track by following a schedule where you wake up and fall asleep at the same time
• Avoid caffeine after lunch
• Use the app f.lux on your computer, tablet, or phone to block blue light waves that trick your brain into thinking that it’s earlier in the day
• Take an Epsom salt bath before bed
• Get at least 30 minutes of sunlight a day, this will help with serotonin which increases melatonin production
• Pray or meditate. We all have a spiritual side, even if that’s only a deeper connection to ourselves. There are great apps like Headspace that will guide you into meditative states that help you process emotions more effectively and improve your health

How CBD Helps Us Sleep
Please always bear in mind that because of the federal government’s misguided and militant stance on Marijuana, we don’t have as much peer review “gold standard” research as we should, but what’s out there sure points to the efficacy of Medical Marijuana and CBD for sleep.
Thankfully we can count on our friends over at GW Pharmaceuticals to provide some convincing research results!
In their study, Cannabis, pain, and sleep: lessons from therapeutic clinical trials of Sativex, a cannabis-based medicine (Chemistry & Biodiversity, Wiltshire, UK, 2007, NIH), the scientists stated plainly:
“Cannabis sativa L. has been utilized for the treatment of pain and sleep disorders since ancient times.”
And then went on further to say:
“Experience to date with Sativex in numerous Phase I-III studies in 2000 subjects with 1000 patient-years of exposure demonstrate a marked improvement in subjective sleep parameters in patients with a wide variety of pain conditions including multiple sclerosis, peripheral neuropathic pain, intractable cancer pain, and rheumatoid arthritis, with an acceptable adverse event profile.
No tolerance to the benefit of Sativex on pain or sleep, nor need for dosage increases have been noted in safety extension studies of up to four years, wherein 40–50% of subjects attained good or very good sleep quality, a key source of disability in chronic pain syndromes that may contribute to patients’ quality of life.”
40–50% of the subjects attained good or very good sleep quality! This is huge! With no tolerance or need for dosage increases!
Even studies for Ambien and benzodiazepines like Xanax don’t have this type of success rate. In fact, one study, Insomnia in hospitalized psychiatric patients: prevalence and associated factors (Neuropsychiatric Disease & Treatment, April 2018, NIH) concluded that 67.4% of the patients experienced more severe insomnia due to the presence of antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Guaranteed side effects AND a 2 out of 3 chance at the OPPOSITE of what you want? We deserve better solutions. We have better options.
Other studies carried out by Big Pharma investigating cannabinoids and obstructive sleep apnea suggest that synthetic cannabinoids such as nabilone and dronabinol may have short-term benefits for sleep apnea due to their modulatory effects on serotonin-mediated apneas.
“CBD may hold promise for REM sleep behavior disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness, while nabilone may reduce nightmares associated with PTSD and may improve sleep among patients with chronic pain.”
In this study, Effectiveness of Cannabidiol Oil for Pediatric Anxiety and Insomnia as Part of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Case Report ( The Permanente Journal, Fall 2016, NIH), scientists in the psychiatry department at the University of Colorado, Boulder, acknowledged that anxiety and sleep disorders are often the result of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and can also contribute to an impaired ability to focus and to the demonstration of “oppositional behaviors.”
They sought to alleviate the suffering of a ten-year-old girl who was sexually abused and had minimal parental supervision as a young child under the age of five. Pharmaceutical medications provided partial relief, but the results were not long-lasting, and there were major side effects.
“A trial of cannabidiol oil resulted in a maintained decrease in anxiety and a steady improvement in the quality and quantity of the patient’s sleep. Cannabidiol oil, an increasingly popular treatment of anxiety and sleep issues, has been documented as being an effective alternative to pharmaceutical medications.
This case study provides clinical data that support the use of cannabidiol oil as a safe treatment for reducing anxiety and improving sleep in a young girl with post-traumatic stress disorder.”
We need more of this brave research from scientists in states where Marijuana is legal. Here in Florida, we extend our gratitude to scholars at the University of Florida who is leading the nation on research for Medical Marijuana for HIV/AIDS.
And if you aren’t quite convinced yet, in this study with animal models, Effects of acute systemic administration of cannabidiol on sleep-wake cycle in rats (Journal of Psychopharmacology, March 2013, NIH), scientists concluded:
“The systemic acute administration of CBD appears to increase total sleep time, in addition to increasing sleep latency in the light period of the day of administration.”
And finally, we know that CBD reduces cortisol levels, which alleviates that jangled nerves feeling so that you can get a calmer night’s sleep.
